Uttama Villain: Neither an Uttaman Nor a Villain

I asked a number of questions to myself about few attempts made by my hero in this movie and I myself answered the questions to justify. Questions represent a Neutral Audience point of view and the Answers represent a Die Hard Fan of Kamal's point of view. Here you go:

  1. He, with his family pack belly - was that really necessary to dance for 'Love-ah Love-ah'. Did it not look awkward? Did it not remind us of Sivaji Ganesan dancing with Sridevi?Yes, it looked awkward. But Mano is introduced as an aged Star Actor and the song sequence comes in the latest Masala movie of the star. After all, attempting to dance, dance with a young girl - no matter what is genuine in a super Star's career, that too in a Mass Masala movie. Who has not done it including M.G.R. and Rajnikant?
  2. Wasn't it too much to see Kamal acting in kissing scenes with Andrea?

I remember an interview where Kamal says about Uttama Villain - "About half of the movie will reflect my original character". I do remember another old interview of him where he says "People, when touches 60 years of age will suddenly start to portray themselves as aristocrats, but I will never". He is a person who does things which he loves to, never minding about the society - and he just did!
  3. In the movie, Mano wants to shoot a comedy film with Margadarisi. But, where was the comedy? There are three styles of comedies:

One is Santhanam, Goundamani comedies where the comedian hurts someone verbally or physically to make people laugh.

Second is Vivek, Vadivelu style where the comedian either hurts himself to make people laugh or trolls some social nuisances and ends with a powerful social message.

Third is the one and only Kamal Hassan style. All his comedies if you see will either be based on situation or based on the verbal rhetorics - homonymns, homophones and rhyming words (in Tamil what they call as 'Edhugai-Monai'). For example: 'Thick' Friends aagittanga while Prabhu Deva and the Registrar(who also stammers while speaking) converses. It will never hurt anyone.

Uttama Villain is purely of the Third genre of comedy stated above.
  4. Isn't Kamal voluntarily getting into scandals by scripting sequences such as Lord Vishnu dies in the Prahlada Story?Prahlada Story is an epic and yeah, it is the religious belief of Hindus. But, every artist should possess something called 'Mano Dharma', otherwise called as'Creativity' and Kamal is one such artist.

In the Uttaman story, Mutharasan is the B-i-L of Sadayappa Varman, the king. He kills the king to attain the throne of Muthu Vala Naadu. When the princess 'Karpagam' conspires with Uttaman and the ministers to kill Mutharasan by being sweet with him, the come up with an idea to make Mutharasan act in as Iraniyan in Prahlada story. The idea is to make Uttaman act as Nrisimha to kill the Iraniyan character in reality. But, Mutharasan protests to give him a significant role which has minimal dialogues. Uttaman is pushed to take Iraniyan role and give Nrisimha role to Mutharasan. Mutharasan should die but he wants a role which kills instead of dies - what else to do other than killing Mutharasan somehow? They throw a poisonous material to Mutharasan (who acts as Lord Nrisimha) and he kills himself.

When there are a number of alternate versions to the tales like 'Hare and the Tortoise' and 'Aaya vadai sutta kadhai', why not a different version to Prahlada story? This is what is called as 'Mano Dharma'! Take a bow, my hero!
  5. Isn't he stealing the chance of many other singers by singing all songs himself? Not at all. Though all the songs in the Uttaman story are sung by Kamal himself, what I see is this: Uttaman is introduced as a folk artist. A millennium back, there should have been no chance to do dubsmashing. ;-) A folk artist should do both singing and dancing in parallel by himself. And thus, Kamal sings all the songs.
If you want to add anymore questions to this list, I would be more than happy to answer!
